How to tell if breeding my maltese was sucessful

I had my 16 month old 'Snowball' bred last week and I wonder how to tell if it worked? Should the swelling continue or go down? Other ways to tell? Or do I just wait a month and listen for heartbeats with stethoscope? I am soooo excited and hope it was successful! Thanks :)
