Question
My lab has that skin condition and he chews on himself every now and then.  he is now chewing and licking himself, I heard there was specific food you could feed them to help that, is that true?  He is 15years old and we are just trying to make him as comfortable as possible.

Answer
There are a lot of health claims for this diet and that diet.  I haven't seen any hard evidence that any of them make that much difference.  At the most, try adding a table spoon of ordinary liquid cooking oil a day to his diet.  Give him a good brushing every day with a soft bristled brush.  Give as few of baths as possible.

If he is working on one particular spot, ask the vet about arthritis.  My 13 year old quit licking her one paw after going on Prednisone.
