stinky black lab

Question
I have a 3 yr old black lab that has been having a problem lately with smelling like dirty sweaty feet!  Someone told me that labs have a natural oil that can cause this odor and to try rinsing him with vinegar after washing him.  This did not work.  He is stinking up the house and I am desperately seeking answers as to how to get rid of his smell. He has also had bad dandruff lately. Please help.  Thank you.

Answer
Sometimes when they start smelling for no reason, it can be a health issue, so if you haven't had the dog in for a check up in awhile, you may want to consider that.

Have you changed foods?  Is the dog swimming more than normal?  Are you bathing the dog with shampoo more than normal?  Have you checked to see if the smell is isolated to an area?  Ears or area on coat?  You can have the vet/groomer check anal glands.

Dandruff can be related to the heat and if the dog is shedding.

For dog shows, we use a combo of the plain brown listerine and water (about 75% water/25% listerine) as deoderizer and to help with dandruff.  There are also spray on conditioners for dogs at Petsmart/Petco or you can even wipe the dog down with a baby wipe.
