what type of collar is best

Question
We have a 6 mo. old great dane puppy that we are starting to train. What is the best collar for her? We have some martingale collars (used with greyhounds) that have been working, but they do not last long. While I am do what the trainer (classes start in 3 weeks) told me to do, she still is pulling and has almost broken 2 of them. I am trying to get her used to going to the car, getting in and getting out. I don't want her to get loose in the front yard or while we are out someplace. She is getting better, but what should I use until she is trained?

Answer
Using a martingale is usually a good type of collar to use. However you can always try a "Gentle Leader" or a "Head Halti" as well...these types of collars control the dogs head. If she tries to pull ahead this collar is designed to make the dog turn around, therefore not allowing the dog to pull. You have to introduce them to this collar properly so that they learn that it is a good thing and will not want to take it off every time you put it on. The best way to do this is to give them a treat as you are putting their face through the loop.

If that collar does not work, you can use the good old fashion prong or pinch collar. This collar when used correctly is a GREAT training tool, I have used this collar for 10 years plus with my Shepherds, Danes, Corsos and Am. Bulldogs. This is a training collar only and should not be left on the dog when they are playing with other dogs, out in the yard or just all the time...This collar is meant to be used as a correction only, I am including a link to a video for proper use of this collar.

If you go to your local Petsmart or Petco an associate there should be able to show you how to fit the collar properly and how to use the correction.

Good luck with your training classes!!!
