Great dane fever and red eyes

Question
My great dane is 80 days old; I am feeding him pedigree puppy food. A week after vaccination, he is feeling feverish, vet administered him antibiotic, very next day he was better. And now again he is feverish, red eyes and he always sleeps. Please help me with a suggestion. What could be the problem?

Answer
Jamuna,

First of all, you have to switch him to a better food. Pedigree is not going to give your puppy the proper nutrients for a healthy life. Please look through some of my previous posts for good foods to try. You can always go with Nature's Variety, Wellness or Fromm. Those are some of the better foods that will help a young puppy grow into a healthy adult dog.

As far as the fever and redness in the eyes are concerned, I cannot tell you what steps to take beyond going back to the veterinarian. Make sure that he is hydrated, and that he continues to eat. If he stops doing these two things, you need to take him to the vet immediately.

For a puppy that does not have all their vaccines, do not take him to places where other dogs wander. If he has a compromised immune system, it will only get worse and he has a higher chance of becoming ill.

As with vaccines for humans, there are side effects and your puppy might just have a reaction to the vaccine.

Hope this helps, and sorry for the delay, I forgot to set my vacation message as I have been out of town since Thursday.

Have a good one.
