Golden gets tired of dog food

Question
Hi Labman,

My wife and I have a Golden, 1.5 years old. She's a voracious eater and eats almost anything, meat, veggies, bread, rice, you name it, and she'll eat it. The problem is that she will eat dog food at first, but once the bag is 3/4 consumed, she won't touch it anymore, unless you mix in some beef broth (home made) or liver spread. We switched her to another brand, which she ate. In fact, she consumed a whole big bag. So, we bought another big bag. Now, more than half the bag is left and she won't touch it unless we add some soup or liver spread.

I thought that once a dog liked a certain type of food, they don't get tired of it, like humans do. Why is our dog like this?

Answer
My answer is that she is spoiled by being given rich food and is being over fed.  That is nearly always the case with picky eaters.  Compare her body build to this illustrated guide, http://www.puppychow.com/products/popup_body_condition.aspx  You need to adjust her food and exercise to begin a weight loss.

While you are feeding her less to lose weight is an excellent time to discipline her to eat a steady diet of one dog chow and nothing else.  Put down the dish with what the dog should eat, and give it 15 minutes to eat. Then take it up. Do not give it anything to eat until its next scheduled meal. In a few days, it should be eating what it needs. Continue to check its ribs and adjust the food as needed. This is not easy. I had a Shepherd go 3 days on a few nibbles. I was a wreck, but she was fine. It is almost unknown for a healthy dog not to eat what it needs. Unfortunately, in too many cases, it is less than the package says, and less than the owner thinks the dog should have. Many dogs are quite good at holding out for tastier chow. Like kids, sometimes it calls for tough love.
