eating bones

Question
Is it ok to let my German shepherd eat the bone from a T-bone steak?  My wife heard from someone that indicated that this type of bone could be bad for our dog.

Answer
This is a very contentious issue.  My position is that dogs get along without bones just fine.  Many people give their dogs bones and see little problems.  Dogs occasionally do have major problems with bones splintering and injuring their intestines.  I have noticed my 12 year old Aster's teeth are in very good shape still retaining the 3 lobed clove like ends on her front teeth like all dogs have when younger.  Aster has never had anything to chew except Nylabones, kongs and other safe, artificial toys.  Many younger dogs have their teeth worn down from gnawing abrasive natural bones.  We always gave bones to the one pet we had years ago.  By the time he was Aster's age, his teeth were mostly gone.

As much as dogs enjoy real bones, they are better off without them.
