Question
QUESTION: I have a 9 month old female english bulldog. She has a hot spot on her cheek and constantly itches and scratches it until it bleeds. I took her to the vet and our vet prescribed her phendisone along with benadryl and medicated powder. I have used this for about a week and it has definetly improved, but it seems that the "scab" will not heal properly. I feed her royal canine for bulldogs, so I do not think it is the food. Do you have any suggestions as to what might be the problem? Should I give it a little longer or should I have her allergy tested? Thank you for your time.

ANSWER: I Love English Bullies!!  Poor kid!  The steroid should help clear the area up for now... It is just a temporary repair.... The food you are feeding is good but she could have Environmental allergies...
Continue with the Steroid and benadryl for a few more weeks.  Follow your Vet's directions on this.
I would love for you to get her onto NuVET Plus - This is a All Natural Supplement for Skin and Coat / An Immune System Booster...
It will cost you about .50 cents per day for the NuVET Wafer Treats.  Yum Yum good, too!

Once she is on the NuVET Plus, you should be able to reduce or stop the Steroid treatments.  Steroids are very strong drugs and are not good for Long term usage.

NuVET can only be found at Groomers, Breeders and VET offices.... You can buy from the Main company here:
http://www.apluspetcare.com/untitled4.html
The cost at the VET is much higher.... Go direct to the site and order.  They will send you NuVET right to your door step ...

As for the area on her face.  YOU can buy some EMT gel.  This is found at most Pet Stores... Ask them for the EMT gel or spray.  You can also order this on-line at www.petsmart.com

BEST wishes to you and your girl.

Please start her on the NuVET ASAP...  They can get it to you within 3 days / by Priortiy mail..

QUESTION: Maria, thank-you for answering my question and giving your advice. I will look into the vitamins. I just wanted to ask if I continue her medications and she is still having problems, then should I get her allergy tested? And if so what type of test? By the way she weighs 51lbs. Thank-you again, Christina

Answer
Hi:  Allergy testing is in order if the NuVET Plus does not help...

Allergy Testing will cost you at least 500.00.  ( you can go to your regular vet or a dermatologist vet)

Many times, with Allergy Testing, they will come up with over 20 items that a dog can be allergic to... Many times it is environmental things that you can and Can Not change.  Also, there will be some foods on the list, too.

Hold off on this for a time.  Try NuVET and give it 90 days... Also, give the meds, from your doctor, a chance to take effect.

You can also use some Aloe Vera Gel on her face, for relief and healing.... ( EMT gel is great,too..)
