Question
QUESTION: Our bulldog, Spike, is almost 10 yrs. old.  We were feeding him Wellness, then changed to Nutro.  We took him to the beach and he got burrs in his feet.  We took him to the vet when we got home and he said to just put some antibiotic cream on in and it would work itself out.  Well that was about six months ago and it is terrible.  We took him to our local emergency vet about two weeks ago.  His bloodwork and x-rays were great, but they said his foot was infected.  He took 10 days of Bactrin, spray on the hotspot area, and 2 daily soaks in Epson Salts.  He briefly got better and is now back to limping and screaming when we touch him on his leg, not foot.  We are going to change his food back to Wellness and are going to start the NuVET.  I'm going to take him back to the vet, but wanted to ask you your opinion.

Oh LISA!!! How awful for you and Spike.... YES, lets get him on some supplements to heal...

Start this boy on some ESTER C 1000mg per day for 10 days and then go down to 500 mg per day.  ( ESTER C is easy on the belly and helps fast healing)
( this is the human kind of C)

NEXT - YES, he needs the NuVET Plus supplement for long term - I would put him on 2 wafers per day for 10 days and then drop to 1 1/2 NuVET Plus wafers per day .... They break in 1/2 easy.  HE will think it is a wonderful treat.

Next, tell your vet you would like to give him (1) 81 mg Baby aspirin per day for the leg pain and inflammation.  MOST vets feel a baby aspirin is fine.

When you call NuVET - ask for the TEA TREE oil Shampoo / hot spot shampoo and HOT spot spray ( made with TEA tree oil)
The spray is about 7.00
The shampoo is around 10.00  ( Bath just 2-3 x per month in this TEA TREE oil shampoo )  KEEPs the skin healthy and heals.

Here is the number for NuVET -
1-800-474-7044
Call in for fast shipping.  ( not sold in stores / JUST thru Holistic vets offices and the manufacturer)
Make sure you use order code 81098 and tell them YOU are working with Pet Nurse Marie Peppers from All Experts.

Also, PLEASE place him on the Wellness food - Nutro is awful and full of Corn and junk fillers.
Please add some PURE salmon oil to his food (1-2 teaspoons per day).
PURE salmon oil such as Grizzley oil can be found at many pet stores.

YOU may need to do a stronger Antibiotic - Ask the vet about the Z-Pack for dogs .... He will know what I am talking about.

BEST wishes !
Keep me posted

QUESTION: Hi Marie,
We did everything you said and Spike is much better!  We cancelled the MRI last Thursday!  I do have one more question though.  We severely limited Spike's exercise (i.e. no steps, no long walks, no jumping, etc.).   Our normal vet could not find anything wrong with his foot, so he suggested letting Spike do his normal routine (that was on Thursday).  We continued with all of your suggestions, but my husband did add glucosomine back into Spike's diet.  Spike was screaming again by Saturday when you rubbed his throat or his ears.  Is it possible that he is allergic to glucosamine?  I also think at this point that it is Spike's shoulder that is really the problem and his foot is secondarty.  That would explain why he screams when we touched around his throat. Any suggestions more than what you've already given us?  Again, thank you soooo much for your help, our dog was on his deathbed!

Answer
Wow- the NuVET will help - increase it to double dosages and take him off the glucosomine for now.
The NuVET heals and also lessens any inflammation.  You can also try a baby aspirin ( 81mg) - just 1 per day to aide any swelling?

Use a harness for spike - much more comfortable.
**( nothing tight around his neck, ok?

Also, I would do some exercise but still be somewhat limited.
If you want - the NuVET folks also makr a joint supplement called NuJoint Plus - you can start giving him 1-2 per day.  VERY helpful for the joints...
This product is great and I never hear of anyone allergic to it.
Human grade and natural....
