Question
I just wanted any help or tips you might have. Me and my girlfriend have a 3 year old Pit Bull and we are planning on buying him a lil brother in about a month. Don't worry our pit bull was raised with a mini snauzer up until about 6 months ago and they played great. Anyways we our looking at local breeders in our area, the pet store in our area has a really bad reputation, and I wanted to know what we should look for when we meet with the breeders. P.S. we are gonna get a male and have him fixed. What are the best ways about house breaking the dog, I have heard crate training works great. Next I have heard that they don't need long walks or time at the park just lots of playing with toys and attention. Is that true. Last question I can think of is what do you know about Boston Pit mixes. I meet a girl that works at Petco and she breeds these dogs and they are so cute and I am thinking about getting one of those puppies. They look like a mini Hammer, which is our pit. Do you know anything about that breed?

Answer
Boston terriers get along with anything. Mine play nicely with a doberman. It sounds like you have a well adjusted pit which is a credit to you and the breed. Though you can gain lots of information from a pet store, I don't advise buying from them as their pups come from puppy mills, therefore they also come with a lot of insecurity problems that are hard to handle. I don't care what they say. Breeders are always the best bet. Sounds like this girl has a nice looking breed...boston/pit. I have never seen one but I am betting they are adorable. At any rate, I think your boy will get along with one of those...not necessarily because of the breed but because you have a well socialized dog.
When meeting with breeders, note the temperament of their dogs. Are they happy or nervous. Many home breeders crate their dogs 24/7 and when prospective buyers come around,,,quickly bring them out for a show of nice house happy dogs. With the pup,,,you want to see a nice shiny coat ( signs of good feeding)and pink gums (signs of good health) .
Training does work well in a crate...but gives the pup a closed in feeling. What I do is ....get a small exorcise pen...and set it up in my kitchen.  Put in a small grate with blankie..minus the door, another small blankie/towel to lay/play with a few toys and one square of newspaper at the side. In this small closed area, he will learn to use the paper and still be able to see all and not feel shut away. This for the small pup too young to learn to hold it yet. Do not leave food at all times in there, remember, within 10-15 minutes after eating your pup will need to potty, free feeding means a lot of mess.
You can spend time playing with you dog instead of walking. Bostons enjoy both. And remember this ...during play...bostons NEVER get enough...which is why I walk mine too.
Lots of luck to you.
