Bostons sinuses/breathing

Question
A couple of days ago our 5 yr old started acting like he was heaving when he breathed hard or got excited. I can hear him when he breathes normally and sounds like he has congestion when he is breathing. He enjoys being outside with us and it is coming on spring with all its ever present pollen. Is their something like benedryl or other that can be safely given to relieve his congestion and dry his sinuses up some?

Answer
Hi Gary.  This is the time of year that allergies start popping up, and some people do give their dogs human grade over the counter Benadryl. However, I strongly suggest that you call your vet and have him/her tell you how much to give (based upon your dogs weight).

Don't be surprised if your vet requests that he examine your dog to rule out other causes (such as upper respiratory infection)before he/she gives the ok on Benadryl. If your dog has an infection, Benadryl will not help, and could actually compound the problem.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be of assistance.  If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  Sincerely, Penny D.
