Kitten litter box training

Question
Hi, my daughters cat had a litter of six kittens six weeks ago.  They are starting to pee and poop on their own.  I thought that the mother would train them to go in the litter box, but they are going all over the place, sometimes right next to the litter box.  How can I get them litter box trained?  How soon can they leave their mother?

Answer
Hi Lorraine,

Congrats on your new family. Kittens pretty much train themselves but there are a few things you can do to help.
First off, since these are newborns your litter pan needs to be very low. They cannot climb into a normal size pan. I use a lid from a box of computer paper. It is only about an inch high. Use an unscented litter in it. Take the kittens and place them in the litter pan. They should start scratching around in it. They should start using it themselves. But you must make sure that they can climb into it. Change the litter every day.
Let me know what happens. Good luck.

Ciao, Karen
