Cat paces and whines at night

My 11 year old neutered male tabby has started to pace around at night and let out soft whines, almost like a whimper. I let him out and 20-30 minutes later he's scratching at the door to come back in. He is an indoor cat most of the time. His food and water dishes are full and his litter box is clean. He isn't very sociable with other cats, so I do not think he wants to "pal around" with the outdoor cats that are in the area. Thanks.

I'm not a vet, but from having an older neutered male I can only recommend a quick trip to your Vet to check for possible crystal in his urinary tract.  This makes them pace and cry a little.  Have you noticed your cat trying to urinate in odd spots, but not going at all or just a tiny bit?

For his health and your peace of mind, I would rule out anything medicial at his age!
