Answer
Jessica,

Breeding cats entails a tremendous responsibility. One has to be prepared to find homes for the kittens, if all comes out OK.  One has to be prepared to deal with the heartache and expense if the queen runs into problems during kittening.

My suggestion is to join a local cat club associated with a reputable registry (I would have to know where you live to make any additional suggestions).  One of the best ways to get your feet wet is to go to one of the local cat shows and see how you like what goes on.  In fact, if you agree to help out at the show, often an invitation to join may be forthcoming.

I would further suggest breeding pedigreed cats.  Before you do that, you would want to get a neuter of spay of a breed you like and learn by showing this cat.  This way you can get practical experience which is much richer than all the book learning and find out much more about the cat fancy hobby.  You may even find a breeder who will help mentor you as their protege.

Like any other society there are nice cat fanciers and not so nice cat fanciers.  As a young adult you may have a challenge getting some of the people you meet to take you seriously.  If you find you enjoy the shows and the people and your parents are behind you, you might want to see about looking at breeding in a couple of years.

This is a very rough overview about how to start.  Please feel free to follow up with any questions you may have about any of the above.

Best regards... Norm.
