Question
we have had our first cat for about 3 years and my daughter has came home with a 10 month old kitten and our older cat dislikes the kitten. our cat will only hiss and spit at the other cat and we are not sure how to get them to become friends?
so some help would especially great full.

Answer
Hi John, This is always unnerving to watch but they usually (99%) of the time are able to work it out. With a younger kitten it would have happened quicker. What I would suggest is to give the new kitten his own space without the older cat around. ie the recroom, spare bedroom. Keep the new kitten in there for 3-4 days. It gives the older cat a chance to get used to a new cat in the house without feeling threatened.  They can bat at each other under the door and make a casual acquaintance. Once or twice a day get them to switch positions. This gives the new cat a chance to explore the house and feel comfortable and it gives the old cat a chance to sniff the new cat without actually having to be too close!
In a couple of days your older cat will probably be DYING to get to know the kitten and play with it.
