Kitten problems!

Question
Hi.  Nine weeks ago we adopted a semi feral kitten of approx. 5 months old.  She had been born in a colony outside and was trapped by cats protection, spayed and as they thought she could be homed, put her with one of their cat foster carers for about two weeks.  We then adopted her (she's called Maisy) and she spent most of the first two weeks in the back of my daughter's wardrobe!  I still have to feed her upstairs as she is too nervous to come down to the kitchen and if my daugher brings her downstairs, she just runs back up.  She seems to have bonded quite well with my daughter (who is 13) but still runs away when I or my husband approach her.  She will only let me stroke her when she is sitting on my daugher's bed.  We always wanted to adopt two kittens together, however she was on her own, but recently we have adopted a very friendly 10 week old kitten (Princess) and Maisy just doesn't like her at all.  Princess just wants to play and be friendly but Maisy has resorted to living in the wardrobe and spits and growls when she sees Princess.  At the moment at night and during the day when we are out we have to keep Princess in one room and Maisy remains upstairs.  When we are in Princess is around us all the time and is very loving and affentionate and Maisy wont come downstairs at all.  We don't quite know which way to go with this, can you please offer any advice?

Answer
Hi Debbie,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. It was hectic here over the weekend. Maisy was beginning to settle in the house and was looking on it as her own territory. When you brought the little one in it disturbed her balance. You have one good thing going for you though, both are very young. It will take time but they will both settle in. Try a product called Feliway. It acts like a kitty tranquilizer and will calm Maisey down. Give her a little extra attention. Bring her special treats. For winning a cat over I use a little deli chicken; it works wonders. Time is what will make all better. Give them about a month and see what happens. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Ciao, Karen
