Cat Postpartm

Question
Two weeks ago a very young, malnourished, stray pregnant cat adopted us. Because we were planning on taking her to the Humane Society, we kept her outside but we made sure she had food and water every morning and night. We thought we had plenty of time to get her to the center but as nature would have it, she gave birth one hour before we got home Friday, May 25th. We immediatly took her and the six kittens inside. She wasn't interested in letting the kittens feed so we got the necessary stuff to do it ourselves. Unfortunatly, one at a time, the kittens died. I believe they were premature. We have decided to keep "Ms. Kitty" and take care of her, have her spaded and all that stuff. It has been 4 days since she had the kittens and I just noticed a bloody sticky substance in the box she is sleeping in. I picked her up and took a look at her vaginal area. There is the same sticky bloody type substance at the entrance of her vagina as well. Other than licking her vaginal area alot, she is eating and using the bathroom with no problem. She does seem like she doesn't have alot of energy though. But that is how she has acted since she found us. She just seems to be one of those mello type cats that just want to eat, poop, pee, lay around and be snuggled and petted.
Should we take her to an emergency vet because of bloody substance?

Answer
I suggest that you do take her to the vet. She will probably need some antibiotics at least, if not further medical attention. I suspect an infection, which may be what caused the death of the babies.
In any case, it is only good sense to have her checked.

Good luck,
Barb
