New kitten and Older Male Cat

Question
Hi,

I have a male cat which is probably around 9-10 months old. He has always been very affectionate and extremely playful. I brought home a small female kitten (not sure how old, maybe 7 weeks or so)a week ago. The male cat sniffed around her a lot the first couple of days, and then tried to mate with her, for lack of better words. I did stop him before anything happened but I was very disgusted about the whole thing, and he has tried to do this a few times. I have to keep them separated when I am not able to watch them. He is not neutered and I plan on getting him neutered this week. Is this normal? Will it stop once he has been neutered?

Thank you,

Heather

Answer
Of course this is normal. he is sexually mature and although she is only 7 weeks old, he doesn't know any better. You will have to keep them apart and have him neutered. You will also have to get her spayed between 5 and 6 months old. He should get over this once neutered. I have a male and female, both fixed and there has never been any hanky panky so it can be accomplished with the surgeries.
