Screaming Cat

Question
Hi.  My 12 year old cat has always been "special" in the sense that she has always pooped outside of the box, bites when she gets over stimulated, etc.  However, for the past couple of years she's been screaming/talking during the early morning and will not be quiet until my husband and I are both out of bed.  Lately, this behavior has gotten worse, where she will literally SCREAM until we get out of bed.  She has food.  She has water.  She has attention whenever she wants it (expect when we're sleeping).  I am pregnant and need to sleep past 4:30 AM and my husband is starting to fall alseep at work.  I have an appointment on Thursday at a vet, however, I do not think there is anything physically wrong with her.  I think she's just going crazy.  Any advice on dealing with this?  I honestly don't know what to do.  We do not have a room that we could put her in to sleep....  Thank you!

Answer
AJ,

I am assuming your cat is spayed!

I have heard of this before, but I have not encountered a good solution.  If there is nothing physically wrong with the cat, you could see if your vet will prescribe something to mellow the cat (like prozac).  I know of people who get those airline ear plugs they give to people in first class for trans-Oceanic flights. These are very comfortable and do a good job of blotting out noise.  As persistent as cats can be, if she found her screaming behavior was able to manipulate your response, she would continue to do so and, mayhaps even amplify it.

Good luck and best regards... Norm.
