Question
I am in the market for a maine coon cat. There are 3 breeders which I have found on the internet/or advertising in Cat Fancy in my area- they all seem to produce show cat champions of some sort. How do I choose which one to purchase a cat from?

Answer
HI Debbie,

I'm actually a Maine Coon breeder, what are the names of the catteries?

The BEST way to choose a breeder is to visit them in person.  By doing this you can meet the parents of your kitten, their personalities will tell you a lot about how your kitten will be as an adult.  It will also allow you to see how the cats are housed and raised, a breeder that will not show you their cattery has something to hide and you should see giant red flags.  Kittens depending on their age might be somewhat shy however the adults should be for the most part outgoing and happy, the odd cat won't be but if the majority are then you know the cats are well socialized.  All of the cats/kittens should also appear healthy.  All of these things can only be seen if you go in person, you will also get a 'vibe' from the breeder and environment, be sure you are comfortable with the situation and the breeder themselves as there will be a relationship involved.  Ask lots of questions, the breeder should be happy to answer them for you.  Ask about the testing history of the parents, do they screen for HCM(A heart condition), no one can guarantee an HCM free kitten but a reputable breeder does screen their adults.  Ask to see the contract, most will have an indoor only, no declaw and spay/neuter agreement, but there should also be a health guarantee that will protect you should something unfortunately go wrong.  Kittens are living breathing creatures and even the best of breeders can have issue's from time to time, the good breeders are the one's who will help you through these problems rather than leave you to it.

Hope this helps and good luck with your new baby once you get it !  :)
