breeding concern

Question
I have 3 breeding siamese - my blue male is totally cooperative when it comes to breeding the blue female but my flame female is now in heat and he completely ignores her. She has rubbed up to him and been very obvious but he is not interested. I have tried caging the blue female and/or putting her in another room but he 'finds' her and claws to get in to her even though she is not the one in heat. Could my flame not be giving off a strong scent? could he just be selective? All cats are over 2yo and the two blues have had 1 litter together. My next thought is to remove the blue female from the house altogether?? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Janet

Apologies for the delay in replying but I have been away for the weekend at a large cat show.

I have known males to become very laid back about mating girls that he lives with. A case of 'familiarily breeds contempt' situation.

My suggestion would be to remove the male from the house (I guess from your mail that he lives with the girls?) and when your Flame girl comes into heat again, then take her out to him.

In the UK we tend to keep our boys in outside accommodation with a neutered female for company and then the girls are brought out to him, which tends to make the boy very eager to mate.  The situations I have heard of which are similar to yours are always where the boy has lived in the house with the girls.

Marcia.
