Question
Hello Barbara! Thank you for your time.
My husband and I are expecting our cat to have her kittens anytime soon. We also have one male cat (whom she got pregnant from) and her sister at the house with us. All 3 cats are VERY close to us, they fight for our attention. Lately we've noticed our male cat gets extremely jealous when we are holding or caring for the pregnant cat. (of course we are giving her extra special attention) He seems to want to get her again, we aren't sure if this is normal. When he gets by her she will give him a slap with her paw. We have been trying to find a special place for her to have her kittens. We got a big box, put shredded newspapers in there, an old sheet and she doesn't seem to have any interest in it. She stays in our room a lot now, tends to want to sleep on bed. She does lick her bottom area but shows no other signs of labor. Is there a way I can find out how close she is, or any other advice you can give me? I just want to be prepared for the birth of her kittens and make sure she has everything she needs. I know cats are really independent but she doesn't have any interest in the box we made for her?
We are assuming she got pregnant late January? I am a nervous wreck constantly checking on her to make sure she's okay. I just want everything to be okay with her, what are signs of labor? Sorry I went on and on but I just need HELP!!! Thank you so much for your time and your advice, it's greatly appreciated.

Answer
Everything that you have described is quite normal. I would suggest that you keep the male totally away from her and also away from the babies when they arrive. Some males are loving, attentive parents, but others view them as rivals and might harm them.
If this is her first breeding, then she needs some assistance. Put the box in a dim corner out of any traffic. She will want privacy above anything else. Mamas are very careful of their kittens, but they often do not realize what is happening with the first litter
They usually manage fine, so don't worry. They will arrive at or about 65 days from conception, so if you are correct, it is not quite time yet. Check her breasts. When they get full and puffy, birth is imminent. Although often the milk comes in during delivery. So it is very much like people. Pay attention but do not get crazy. Nature is wonderful about these things!!!

Barb
