Question
My 11 year old Doberman Pincher has Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. She has been on Anipryl for 3 months and was acting like her old self until a couple of days ago. She is back to acting like she did before giving her Anipryl. Our veterinarian put her on Metroclopramide 10mg 3 times daily + her 30mg of Anipryl. My question is, how does Metroclopramide help my dog. I thought Metroclopramide was for nausea. Does Metroclopramide and Anipryl work together to help dogs fight CDS? Thank You    Tami Good

Answer
Metoclopramide is used to reduce vomiting or esophageal reflux.  I have not heard of its use for CDS.  I did look online and it said you should not take Metoclopramide if you have Parkinsons, and Anipryl is what was used to treat Parkinson's in people so I am guessing that this is a contraindication and I would stop the medication.

Other treatment that I recommend for CDS is feeding Hill's Prescription Diet B/D, adding B Complex Vitamins into the diet as well as other antioxidants like Vitamins C & E.
