Question
QUESTION: Is it common for my 4 year old yorkie to be having diarrhea and a little bleeding after grooming?

I had taken my Yorkie to a grooming this passed Saturday. When  I went to pick her up she seem to just want to leave and I didn't really think anything about it. (First time at this groomer, but not her first time getting groomed) After when I got into the car I noticed her butt hole area was red. It looked like  raw skin and when I used a tissue to  clean it, it was a little bloody. Then I noticed my dog was releasing liquid diarrhea. I just thought it was left over from her extraction during grooming. Then it happened again (little liquid diarrhea was coming out), so I called the grooming place and told them what had happen in the car. The began to tell him that she pooped a few times at the grooming place and they noticed it was a reddish color.  I asked them was it blood? and they told me it just looked like  she ate something BBQ. They also told my that they do not use instrument on the animals during extraction.

My dog ate her dinner that night, which I only gave her some of her hard food (Nutro Max) and chicken and  a little rice. I also gave her some pedialyte, but she only drank a little amount. That same night  my dog had about three more times of liquid diarrhea    and  then after 2:00 she had to go to the bathroom every  2 or 1 hour until around 8:00. My dog's poop had become very soft stole and it was   about 1- 2inchs long.

the next morning she ate her breakfast and dinner ( chicken rice and very little hard food). My dog was playing and sleeping fine. But she did not want to drink water and my dog would always want to but her butt on the cold floor. My dog also had a little blood come out of her butt only once today and also very little amount of liquid stole. But she did not poop today and she only peed once. Can you please tell me what is wrong with my yorkie should I just bring her to the vet ?

ANSWER: It is not unusual for a dog to get diarrhea from nerves when going to a new groomer, new boarding place, new vets, etc. Yorkies are especially high strung in this way and I am not surprised by her bloody stool.

I would only be concerned if it looked like they had burned her around the rectum with some clippers or if they were rough on her when they expressed her anal glands. If she has been to another groomer without these problems why did you switch?
I would go back to the other place if she didn't have this problem then.

I wouldn't feed her Nutro for one thing and you giving her chicken and rice is okay for a few days to help clear up her diarrhea but not for the long term.
Nutro is not a balanced diet and adding chicken to that is just giving her too much protein.
Too much protein over time has been implicated in kidney disease among other things and with Yorkies you risk pancreatitis also.

I would get her on a totally balanced diet like Science Diet Small bites food.
They even have a dental diet in small bites that can help keep her teeth and gums healthy.
I would switch her slowly but definitely switch her to Science Diet.

If her stool doesn't clear up by Monday night I would call the vets Tuesday morning and get her in.
If you are unsure if the groomers were rough with her ask around for references to the place. Not all groomers are as gentle as they should be.

QUESTION: Thank you so much for you advice. I will try out Science Diet hard food. I can still feed her chicken or beef mixed with the Science Diet hard food. Do you have any other suggestion on another brand of small hard dog food.

I had changed groomers because the old place that I usually brought her started to become unsanitary, and my sister heard that this new groomer had great reviews from her vet. That same day my sister brought her dog ( 5 months old Maltese) that day and she was fine.

How often do I need to bring my dog to express her anal glands? I usually give her a bath at home, but I do not express her anal glands. I do not really know how to do that. Is there a way I can learn how to do it on my own?

update:
My dog has stop having diarrhea, her stole is still a little soft because we have not feed her that much hard food. I am slowly increasing the hard food amount. She is drinking water on her own, but not as much as normal. I really think she was nervous and I believe that they hurt her during the process of express the anal glands and grooming.

Answer
You need to slowly switch her like you are doing to the harder food. As I explained the first time, you don't want to feed her chicken or beef with the hard food as that gives her too much protein which can lead to kidney disease and other problems.
She doesn't need anything else in her food if you put her on the Science Diet Small Bites Adult food.
You will only add too many nutrients to her diet and that will unbalance it.
So get her on the Science Diet and do not feed her chicken or fish or beef with it. I do not recommend any other food because I have studied small animal nutrition for over 28 yrs and there isn't another food on the market that has the standards and quality of ingredients that Hills has.
I have studied Purina Foods and many others and no one comes close to Hills.

You can ask your vet to teach you how to express the anal glands. It is not a hard thing to do but you certainly have to watch him or her and learn to do it right. Most people do it in a sink just before the bath so that they can wash that horrible smell down the drain!
I hope you find a better groomer or at least that the one you are going to is more gentle next time. Speak up and tell them what happened to your dog after you left.

Her stool should get better as the days go on but make sure you introduce the Science Diet slowly over 7 days.
Thanks for letting me know how she is doing.
