If you have a pregnant dog, the most beneficial thing for her would be to have her checked by a veterinarian.  Pregnant dogs like pregnant humans need regular checkups.  C-sections are not uncommon for dogs, as are severe calcium deficiancies which can cause seizuring and even death.  Your veterinarian can supply you with supplements to ensure a healthy mother dog and healthy pups.  Your veterinarian will also be able to determine how many pups are to be expected.  This is very important, because if your dog stops delivering after three pups, you will know whether or not she is finished delivering the entire litter, or if there is a pup stuck in the birth canal.  If a pup is unknowingly stuck, this will result in not only the death of the pup, but the death of the mother dog as well.  It is very important to know what to expect and how to deal if problems arise during the birthing process.  You may also want to have your veterinarian present during delivery in case an emergency c-section is needed.
The gestation period for a dog is 58 to 63 days.  Milk production may be seen as early as 45 days or not until after the delivery of the first pup.
