Declawing

Question
My cat is around three years old and has been tested positive for feline leukemia.  While my vet says it would be alright to declaw him, I am concerned about his age.  Would it be very painful to have him declawed at this age?  A friend of mine did it to their cat at age four, and they regret doing it.  They said their cat was in a lot of pain and it lost its "spirit".

I have an appointment set up for next week, but not feeling comfortable about it.  Could you please advise what would be best for the cat.

Declawing a cat is painful for a few days after the surgery.  If it is done with the laser, then it is less painful.  Ask your vet to prescribe some pain medication for your cat and ask him/her if the bandages can stay on for 4-5 days.  I find that there is less pain if the bandages stay on longer.
