are they bites or what?

Question
Dr. Gotthelf,
We recently discovered while carressing our cat that he (Ozzy) was scratching an excessive amount around his neck and ear areas.  After closer examination we really couldn't tell what it was, although evidence showed us scabs.  The volume of such grew rapidly.  Since we can't afford to take him to the vet, we  found some anti-parasite medication (Animax) that we had that another vet for another cat prescribed for us for an ear infection, possibly from a wound that got infected.  After we applied the Animax, within 24-48 hours, the scabs were all gone and no new ones appeared.  Also, we learned that apple cider vinegar is great as well.  So, we spray the affected areas with it as well.

Our dog, Bobbi, was also part of this experiment, since she was affected in one particular area which she chewed and scratched, and seemed to want to bite it off.

Anyway, that's all we have for you doctor.  We eagerly await your reply as to whether we did the right thing or not.  Unfortunately, we cannot provide you with any more details because we just don't know where it could have originated, these pathologies.

Sincerely,

Rene & Donna

Answer
This is probably an allergic reaction in your cat.  Animax contains a topical steroid which will help relieve the skin inflammation.  When you run out of the animax it will probably return.  You don't want to use too much of this topically for a long time.
