Home-Cooked meal for peke

Question
Dear Debbie,

Since a baby, my male peke has been very choosy with his meal. In order to encourage weight gain and healthy appetite, I switched to home-cooked lamb, rice, carrot and tomato on a daily basis. Sometimes I switched rice with wholemeal bread. I am feeding him daily and now he is 10 months old and weights around 4.3kg. I am living in an apartment and takes my pekes for 15 - 30 mins 3 times daily walk around my area. I am also supplementing his diet with NutriCoat and hald a tablet of Vit-Sorbit (multivit) daily. My question is how do I know if he is getting his proper amount of meal daily? Do I need anything else to ensure good health?

Answer
It sounds like you are doing a pretty good job of it now.  I'm not sure how good the tomato is for him regularly.  It could be a little acidic.  You might try green beans or broccoli.  As long as he appears healthy and does not become overweight, this diet should be fine, even though quite time consuming.  There are several very good high end, commercially available dog foods out there now to choose from.  Have you tried Iams, Eukanuba, or Science Diet foods? They also make a lamb and rice version.
