Question
My 4 year old male Pug has a thing on his back and I took him to our vet. He diagnosed it as Sebacous Gland Adenoma and said the only thing I can do for Louie is to surgically remove the Adenomas. He only has one so I was wondering if there is anything I can do for it or do to prevent him from getting more? Thank you for your time, it is very appreciated.

Answer
Hello Tomi, This is from the oils in his sebaceous glads.  Many times we don't remove them unless they are growing quickly.  The Vet can use a needle aspiration to take a sample and test it for cancer.  Many times it is non-cancerous... but not always.

Here is some info on the Adenoma:

Sebaceous Adenoma
"These are common benign tumors found more often in older dogs, particularly Boston terriers and Cocker Spaniels. The average age of dogs with sebaceous adenomas is 9 to 10 years. Sebaceous adenomas arise from oil producing skin glands. They tend to occur on the eyelids and limbs. They may be single or multiple, usually are less than an inch across and appear as smooth, lobulated growths on a narrow base or stem. The surface of the tumor is hairless and occasionally is ulcerated."

"Occasionally, a sebaceous adenoma becomes malignant (becoming a sebaceous adencarcinoma).
Suspect malignancy if the tumor is larger than one inch, has an ulcerated surface and is growing rapidly."

All I can offer you is some good Nutritional info for your little pug.
You can start him on a good holistic food that has no fillers:  Innova Evo is wonderful.  If he is overweight you can mix Innova Evo with Innova OVERWEIGHT formula.  You would be getting two different bags of dog food and mix.
If you want to make the change, write to me and I can explain how to go about it slowly.
