Eye weeping

Question
My cat has always been prone to a lot of "crusties" in the corner of his eyes.  Lately, it has gotten worse.  I clean them often and although they don't seem to be bothering him and he doesn't show any symptoms of a cold, its beginning to concern me.  Any suggestions of what may be causing this?
