Young Weimaraner with watery stool today

Question
My 6 month old weimaraner has been eating odd things around the house and attempting to surf any higher surfaces he can reach to explore even more of our home. I caught him standing completely on top of our kitchen table 2 days ago. I have kids at home, so I'm not sure what the latest treasures are. We've all been on poo patrol trying to see if it's been passed. He guards absolutely everything and is begining to snap at all of us if we try to convince him to let go.

He has diarrhea as of today and has vomitted in the past week. His appetite comes and goes...usually no food when he's about to vomit an object. Our vet recommended Purina Puppy Large breed twice a day as much as he wants until 1 year.

I'm concerned that he should see the vet. Is there something I could give him to help him pass whatever's making him feel sick?

Thanks so much.

Answer
Heather,
You are on a collision course with multiple disasters here. First and foremost, is the safety of your children. NO puppy should EVER growl or snap at you if you try and remove something from them. That is a very, very bad sign of a dog that doesn't know who is the Alpha pack master in your household and is trying to get the position.

Once a dog starts to snap at you, it is a very short distance to him snapping in the FACE of one of your kids. I am not trying to sound like a doomsdayer here, I have seen it happen too many times.

The other disaster is this dog is going to ingest something that will block him up and is going to require a very expensive surgery to save his life.
Now if you have money to burn, no problem. But in today's economy, without pet insurance, (which you might want to buy) this dog can run you thousands of dollars.  He might already be blocked now. Not everything passes. Many small objects can get stuck in the small intestines and need to be surgically removed.

The third disaster you are courting is letting this dog eat 'as much as he wants' of any food, let alone a poor quality food such as Purina.  Large breed food alone warrants a careful feeding plan that avoids this exact kind of excess. It is nutrient excesses that cause large breed joint issues. The problem is, since Purina is such a terrible quality of food that your dog would need to eat a lot just to get a small amount of nutrition out of it. I call it the Ounce of Steak protein from a box of Saltine crackers syndrome. It's just not going to happen.

So even though it may cost more at the start, Science Diet Large Breed is a very nutritionally dense food that dogs need very little of to meet their needs.
Science Diet pioneered Large Breed foods after a lengthy study of the problem of hips, elbows and diets were plaguing owners and breeders.

It takes less then HALF the amount of SD to meet the needs of your dog with what you are feeding now. If you buy food less often, are you saving money? You bet you are- plus your dog will be much healthier.

So this is what you need to do in this order:
Get your dog into the vet's for an xray if he still has watery stool in a few days.
Get him OFF the junk food and onto Science Diet Large Breed food and follow the BAG instructions.
Get your dog into obedience right away and start laying down the law with him. He is totally untrained and unmannered if he is jumping up on your tables.
Part of the result of a bad diet is a dog that is ravenously searching for some food to meet his energy needs. Part behavioral and part diet is this dog's problem.

I have studied Purina and other diets along with Hill's since 1988 and have 5 certificates in Small Animal Nutrition. So, yes, I do understand your dog's needs.

Please understand I am concerned about your kids too. I am sure they love this dog, but this dog could be a very huge threat to their safety.
Please let me know how it goes down the line.
