Question
Hi,  I have a 5 year old Rat Terrier who recently started leaking feces (liquid).  A bit here and there, not like a whole B.M.  She eats fine, just once a day, and is healthy, has normal BMs. She has eats 2/3 can of Mighty Dog food per day. No changes in her diet.  Took her to the vet and he said he couldn't find anything wrong, and couldn't help me.  I clean her as much as I can, but my carpet and bed are getting ruined!!  I've tried baby diapers, which won't stay on.  Is there anything you can suggest??  Do you think something that would firm up her stools would help?  I'm desperate, please help.  Thank you!!!

Answer
Yes, change her diet and get her on some real food instead of the canned gunk she is eating.

Mighty dog is full of fat and salt and fat will make the stool slimey and oozy, to the point of it really being greasy and loose.
We have seen many dogs on diets like this have stool issues.
Since the vet checked her he must have checked her anal glands also and found them to not be full or he would have told you.

The fact he didn't discuss diet with you is another sad example of how little vets (like MDs) are taught about diet and prevention.

You need to get this little girl onto a life time diet of Science Diet Adult Small Bites food. I would get the light so that she doesn't get extra calories, even though the food has 50% less fat than a regular diet food.
She needs fiber to clean up and tighten up her stool. She isn't getting any at all in Mighty Dog.
Science Diet has over 50 yrs of veterinary research behind it and thus is one of the most balanced and nutritionally dense foods around.
What does that mean for you?
It means that with its high digestibility you will have less stool to clean up- and what you do will be small, compact and nearly odorless.
It means she will get a lot of nutrition in a smaller amount of food- which means less cost since the food lasts longer.

So transition her slowly over to the new food for seven days and if she turns up her nose at it, mix the canned in by a few spoonfuls a day until it is all dry and no canned.

This is the best and healthiest thing you can do for your dog. Since the vet didn't find a medical condition, then I think the change in diet will do her good.

Get a bag and let me know how she does in three weeks. In the meantime add a small amount of boiled rice or a few teaspoons of canned pumpkin to her food while she is switching over. That will help with the fiber now, but stop it when she is one the dry food.
