cat concussion?

Question
My two cats were chasing one another and one ran into the rocker of a rocking chair and actually spun the chair around by the force of the blow. She seemed kinda dizzy for a few minutes but not so much now. I think she hit the rocker with her cheek bone, cause she seems to favor her left eye but still appears to see out of it ok. I've been watching her close and I don't think she has a concussion or that it was too serious of a hit. But I'm not a vet and not too sure what to watch out for. Right now she is just laying around. The pupils in her eyes keep dilating back and forth, does that mean anything? Should i be worried, or just give her some time?

Answer
Jennifer,

It's difficult to tell what the right thing to do at a time like this is.  I remember one time my cat fell off a 10 foot ladder onto his head.  He ran off had a seizure and then went to his food bowl and started eating.  He turned out to be fine but that doesn't mean that I didn't panic!

The good news is that animals have very thick skulls and their brains actually fill their skulls better than ours and concussions are pretty uncommon.

The signs to look for in any head trauma is pupils being different sizes, circling in one direction, seizures, lethargy, etc.  But as in real life, head trauma can be fairly quiet until it's too late.  I hope your kitty is better now, but if not I recommend you seek veterinary attention as soon as possible.

Good luck to you both
