maltese

Question
Yes, beat me with a wet noodle... i succumbed to a teenager's request to stop in a puppy store.  Should have not given in and gone to a shelter.  OK.  so we have this "purebred" maltese.  At seven months she weighs all of three pounds.  AKC standards are 4-7.  the vet associated with the store wanted to spay her at 3 pounds.  I had acquired two other vet opinions who say this is foolish, as this is an elective procedure.  One vet said that this dog could not possibly be purebred maltese, and must have Chihuahua bread into her.  because of her size, i may not be able to ever have her spayed.  what are your thoughts?  should I pursue the issue?  both the store owner and the contracted vet were not willing to extend the spay period.  the price of the dog included a free spay.  your thoughts would be appreciated.

Answer
Any size animal can be spayed, small or large. Some veterinarians may not be comfortable with this, so find one who is. We even spay tiny rats and mice, so it certainly is possible.

By 7 months she could safely be spayed to get your freebie. Waiting longer may help her mature a bit more, but not significantly.
