eye discharge

Question
my himalayan has a reddish brown eye discharge. Is this normal and if so are there any products to treat it.

Answer
The discharge is usually clear but becomes reddish brown when exposed to air. This is the iron content in the fluids of cats and dogs that turns this color when exposed to air.

Your vet will have some drops that can enlarge the tear ducts to help the tears flow normally as opposed to spilling over. Cats with bulging eyes generally have this problem due to bad breeding (meaning bulging eyes are not good).

If the discharge is any other color than clear such as greenish, cloudy, etc, it is an infection and needs to be treated by the vet.
