black cat turning brown

Question
My 14 year old domestic shorthair cat is recovering well from a severe pancreatitis episode last summer that almost took his life. He's on daily prednisolone and ranitidine. He had a thorough blood test one month ago and it came out fine.

But his black hair is slowly turning brown. Is this common? Should I be concerned at all in the absence of any symptoms?

Answer
Long term steroid usage can cause coat color to change. It is generally not something to worry about if he is being monitored during his usage by the vet.

It will sometimes revert back to black after the steroids are stopped but if he can't be off of them there is no danger in the coat changing color. You might want to ask the vet about stretching out his pred to every other day after a while. That could help with his coat..
