pit bull help please

My pit is 8 years old. He has only been bred once which was about 8 months ago. His penis is in his sheath but the end of it is swelled the size of a tennis ball. He seems to be in no pain. He eats and plays normal. What may be going on?

Which end are we talking about? The tip of his penis or the base of it.

If it's the base, closest to his testicles, then he has two glands there that will swell quite large when he is excited. That doesn't necessarily that it is sexually excited, but could just be rough-housing with him, another dog in the yard etc. It will go down once he is calmed down.

If it is from the tip of his penis, then he needs to see a vet asap. If it stays out and gets dried out, he could need a penis amputation.

So depending on which end we are talking about, you can act accordingly.

I would get him neutered at this point as well. It will save him from some painful conditions later on in life.
