Question
my rat terrier had hge about a year and a half ago. he survived. but now he is having problems seeing in the dark, around dusk, and early in the morning before the sun rises. his judgement is terrible. brought him to my family vet and found out that he has retina degeneration and I was wondering if this is a side effect of hge.

Answer
By "hge" do you mean hemorrhagic gastroenteritis? How old is this dog? I have never heard of this being a side effect of that- more likely it's an age or breed related problem. Could even just be your dog's pedigree has this issue. You might want to contact your breeder (if you got him from one) and ask them if any of the other puppies have this issue.

Most dogs don't have any side effects from hemorrhagic gastroenteritis except some may develop some food intolerance. That can be from them eating suspect foods before their intestinal walls heal completely so they develop sensitivities to the foods.

As far as his retinal detachment, once he gets used to it, he will get around find as long as you don't change the furniture around every day! Dogs that are totally blind do just find.
