large dog breed

Question
I have a lab/shepherd mix.  He is approx. 1 year old this month.  He was rescued from abuse and neglect at 8 weeks and old.  He has a sweet temperment, loves children and no major health problems.  He does have a hereditary form of mange that is treated 2 to 3 times a year (which is very expensive), but that is all.  My question is that although he is very active he limps after rest and he is constantly hungry.  I have him on a diet of science diet recommended by his vet and give him treats for obediance throughout the day.  Should he always seem hungry and is it normal for large dogs to limp after that have laid or slept for a short time to a while?

Answer
Hi Elizabeth,
Your vet. is right, in that Science Diet is a very good food it is one of the premium dog foods out there they are a good company. Check out this site www.hillspet.com you can read up on the food that you are feeding your dog. Not sure why he is always hungry though?!
Maybe he needs a food from Science Diet that is for active dogs or even one of the large breed dog formulas. Make sure you look on the back of the bag to see how much you are supposed to feed him. You should feed him atleast twice a day, like a breakfast and dinner. See if this helps.
As far as the limping after resting, you might want to have his legs/ elbows/ and hips x-rayed at some point. I don't think this is normal for a young dog. And remember he is mixed with 2 large breeds and it is possible he has a touch of Hip dysplasia, he could have a joint disease in his elbows you never know so think about doing an x-ray one day. Take care and best of luck to you and your doggie. Thanks for the question.
