Question
i have a 6 year old cocker spaniel that has developed dry nose in the past few months.i have been useing vasaline, bag balm, bacitracine, and aquaphor(a petrolatum base ointment by eucerine which works the best)2-3x a day on her nose.Ican get the scales to peel off but by the next day the are back now it seem to be getting worse.the corner of her nose is getting very raw(no longer black)and i can tell it is starting to bother her.it also looks like it might be getting infected.is there something over the counter or a home remedy the i can get?aslo is this going to be an ongoing problem or will it clear up in the summer?

Answer
Many of these crusty nose diseases do not respond to topical therapy.  If it is an autoimmune disease, that requires special therapy by a vet.  Sometimes, a crusty nose is the result of previous exposure to canine distemper virus.  So there are many things that can cause this and if it is bothering her, then she may need to have a biopsy done to see if it is a nutritional disease or a true skin disease.
