Question
What is the longevity of the Siamese Cat.  I thought my baby would live 20 years, he was pampered, loved, stroked, slept with me, never went outside, never had any ticks, mites, or fleas.  He just shut down, like his kidneys failed or something.  He died last Sunday and we are stunned.  Thank you.

Answer
Dee,
I am so sorry for your recent loss. Losing a loved pet is never an easy process. I hope you can find peace in that you were able to give him a lifetime filled with love and happiness. Despite all the love we can offer, sometimes nature can be stronger and take them from us before we are ready. It is quite possible that your baby suffered form kidney failure, as these is one of the leading causes of death among cats.
It is true that Siamese are notorious for having longer life spans than most other breeds. However, due to their popularity, they have occurred many breed specific aliments from, over, ill, and inbreeding. Unfortunately the only sure way to know the reason of his passing is to have a necropsy preformed.  If you wish to have this done, discuss the matter with your veterinarian.
Take time to allow yourself to heal, talk with loved ones, and people who knew her and can relate to your grief. Many local humane societies offer pet loss counseling, where you can go and converse with other owners who have recently lost their pets and know first hand what you are feeling.
Again, I am sorry for your loss. Siamese are wonderful cats, and perhaps in time you feel ready to add a new kitten or cat or to your home, not to replace her, but to provide you with the companionship and love these wonderful animals offer. Please feel free to contact me with any additional questions, concerns, or even just to talk.
