Question
I have a grey toulouse goose (quite old), and she is having trouble breathing. There is a lot of gurgling sounds, and just today she started sticking her tongue out like her breathing is extremely labored. I'm going to try to call the vet tomorrow, but I was wondering if I should give her a decongestant. She's a treasured member of the family and looking for some relief for her.

Answer
Hi Diane!  I wish so much I could answer this question for you...but unfortunately, my knowledge on geese is very limited and I would never want to steer you wrong.  There isn't by chance an ER vet near you is there?  It does sound as though she is in respiratory distress. At her age, I would find this quite concerning and immediate veterinary care would be best if that is an option for you.  Generally, when there are periods of respiratory distress in elderly animals, it indicates a heart problem.  I know this to be the fact in dogs, cats, small animals including birds, so I would imagine it would be the same for a goose.
For respiratory problems, steroids are often given to reduce inflammation in the bronchial tract, and oxygen is sometimes needed to regulate the respiratory rate.  There really isn't anything I can tell you to do at home, and I do wish I could.  I am so sorry, as I wish I could help you more.  Please keep me posted on how she does.
Sending many goosey get well kisses!
