Question
My 2 year old, female Shih Tzu scratches a lot. Not to the point of hot spots, but scratching more than I would believe to be normal. I have had many dogs, Shih Tzus included, whose scratching frequencies I have observed that support this observation.

My vet says that she has dry skin, though he didn't say that this was the cause. Besides a generic discussion of allergies, a recipe for a mild shampoo to be made at home and containing glycerin, & a cortisone shot, he had no suggestions.

I have seen a lot of references on the internet to using oils in the food to improve the skin and releieve dryness and itchiness. Safflower oil, fish oils and the like are frequently written about. I am going to try some of these oils to supplement her diet, being careful to have studied the information about dosages found on several sites hoping not to overdose her. I'll probably use the dosages found in a skin care product called Dermatrix for dogs.

What advice, if any, do you offer relative to my attempts to relieve her itching by oil supplements to her diet?

Thank you.

Allen

Answer
Cold marine fish oils are very beneficial - especially the Omega 3 fatty acids.  You should make sure there is plenty of EPA and DHA in the supplement.  I recommend one called Eicosaderm from Dermapet.  It should be available from a vet in your area (to read about theis supplement check out this website:  www.dermapet.com  click on PRODUCTS and then on the Eicosaderm bottle).
