Answer
Hello Pam -

I think your puppy may have more of an umbilical hernia rather then a inguinal hernia. Umbilical hernias are common with puppies and most clear up naturally by 6 (six) months of age. In the case of umbilical hernias, a portion of fat or internal organs protrudes through an incompletely closed umbilical ring.  Umbilical hernias may be present at birth, or may be acquired.  The most common means of acquiring an umbilical hernia is as a result of the umbilical cord being severed too close to the abdominal wall.

There is really nothing more you can do other then wait the time through and if is not completely healed by 6 (six) months then the surgery must be performed.

You should never breed a dog who suffers from a hernia, consult your veterinarian for futher specific information should you want to breed your pet.

I hope this information has helped you and your pet.

Thank you and best wishes to you and your pet.
