Chocolate Star Troubles

Question
Hey there, hope you could help me out.

I was given a 50g salt water tank (this is our second tank, we kept our last tank going for over 4 years with little problems before we decided to break down). Along with our fish we purchased (clownfish, Coral Beauty Angel & Anthias) we decided to get our first starfish, but he only lasted about 36 hours before he croaked. HE was very unresponsive and would not take to any rock or glass. I took him back to my local dealer who checked my water and gave me a clean bill of health (water wise).  My dealer gave me another starfish (bigger and "healthier") which i brought home today and he seems to be curling up too! HE stuck on the glass for all of 5 minutes. I do not want to lose this one as well, any suggestions? Is it me? All the other fish, as well as the crabs, snails and cleaner shrimp seem to be doing great.

Thanks for your help

Answer
Hello Manny.Did you acclimate your starfish properly? Star fish can be very sensitive to water changes and should be acclimated using a drip system(some use a small glass)slowly to a new environment. Sometimes you need to just give him a day or two to adjust to his new environment. Chocolate chip stars are very hardy and not usually difficult to keep. Did your local dealer test for everything? Ammonia nitrates pH Salinity etc.? I am only asking because I know some local dealers who don't do a very thorough job. If they did and everything is fine then you should really have nothing to worry about. If you notice any wounds or deterioration on the arms that is a definite cause for concern. Give it a day or two and if he won't eat and isn't very active call the place you got him from and let them know. Does your local dealer have any kind of warranty?  I know I will usually go out of my way to replace an inexpensive fish or invert if I tested the water and everything seems fine. I know you don't want it to get that far. Maybe you are just expecting him to do too much too soon after all he doesn't even have a brain! Hope I helped!
