Question
Hey I had to ask a new question because it wouldn't let me ask a follow up question. Can you re-explain how to get rid of the ammonia? I'm not too sure I fully understood it. And what do you mean by 'sump'?
Right now I am using a Fluval Clearmax to help get rid of the nitrites. Is there anything I can use to get rid of the Nitrates?

Answer
Hi MItch,

Your filter is why you have nitrates, nitrites and ammonia issues.

Your filter isn't made for saltwater fishes.  It's made for freshwater fishes.

The filter you are using will not filter your tank appropriately.

Canister filters work good for one week to two weeks.  They require media changes every week to two weeks when used for saltwater tanks.  Otherwise, they fill up with bad stuff, and it feeds back into the tank, killing fish.

The truth is, Mitch, you need to consider a better filtration device.  I recommend a sump or a refugium.

Meantime, do water changes.

Remove 50% of your water.  Mix water with salt and measure the salinity, and temperature and replace it into your tank tonight.  You will see a decrease in nitrates and nitrites and ammonia.

Next weekend, remove 25% of the water and do the same thing and then every weekend after that, forever, you need to change 10% if the water to prevent this from happening again.

Water changes are important when keeping saltwater fishes.
