Question
I had a marine aquarium many years ago. I like to read about the new technologies for the hobby. Those high-bright lights for the plants? Don't they give the fish a fit?

And I have to ask; blue ring octopus. I read that they are very bad. But people buy them for their aquariums? What are they thinking?

Answer
Hi David,

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe you're referring to (LED) Light Emitting Diodes when you referenced "those high-bright lights for the plants". My reply to this would be, Yes. They are definitely capable of sustaining both fish, plants and coral. When you say, "Don't they give the fish a fit" unless I'm mistaken, I believe you're referring to causing stress or anxiety to the animal, and my answer to this is No.

Below I've included a great article from Orange County Aquarium Supplies regarding LED aquarium lighting.

Regarding the Blue Ring Octopus and most other Octopus species: they should be kept by an expert only. They do require a lot of maintenance including the proper diet, along with a dedicated aquarium. One of the biggest concerns for captive kept Octopus, would be having it release its ink if startled. In the aquarium, this release of ink will necessitate a large water change to avoid its death.
