Beta/tank/air

Question
Hi, I just bought a new larger tank for my Beta and I was wondering if it is supplying enough oxygen.  It has a filtation system to put air into the water, but I decided not to use that.  It is pretty noisy, and I read it is not necessary to have one for betas.  The tank is one gallon sized, and it is shaped in a triange.  At the tip of the triangle on the cover there is an air opening thats diamond shape and its 1 inch all across both ways.  At the back of the tank there is a tiny opening where the tube would go though if i would have used the filter.  Do you think that is enough air for him from those smaller openings?

Answer
Bettas are rather unique compared to other tropical fish that you can keep them with - they don't get their air supply from the water, they get it from the same place we do! Bettas will come up to breathe air from the water's surface. As long as there is fresh air surrounding his bowl, there shouldn't be a problems. In asia where the fish come from, they often live in filthy water in rice patties and help keep water-borne parasites (like leach larvae) under control. You can keep an air stone in there for a decoration, but your betta friend doesn't really need it.
