what is this?

I have a 10-gallon tank with two african chilids,two fake plants,one small rock and one 10-15 gallon heater and filter.
There is a brownish-black slime on my filter and fake plants.What is this and how do I get rid of it?

Dear Collin,
This certainly sounds like brown algae. Which can be a sign of high nitrates or a imbalance of nutrients. It can often go away on it's own but it's best to try increasing your water changing schedule and wiping it away as much as possible usually resolves this problem.
