worms in tank

Question
Hi,
I noticed that my freshwater tank, which is approx. 30 gal. and holds an angelfish, 4 tetras, and 2 goldfish, has tiny (about an inch long at most), white worms.  They look like hairs actually, stuck on the glass. (I have a white cat - at first glance they look like single strands of fur stuck on the inch of glass above the water line.)  I noticed them "swimming" in the water also during the last water change with gravel vacuuming.  One of the goldfish looks like it's on it's last legs, somewhat struggling to breathe with redder than normal gills.  I know what planaria look like and these are not planaria.  How can I fix this situation?  Will they harm my fish?  Is it possible to get rid of them?  Having had a parasitology class, I'll admit I am wary of sticking a bare hand in there to clean...

Answer
Ok these worms you are describing sound like a parasite they can be treated with "General Cure" to kill them. To help get rid of the worms along with the medicine start doing weekly water changes of about 25% so the parasites don't show up again. The parasite won't have the time to harm your fish if you start add the medication to kill them.
